A Hardware Verification Methodology for an Interconnection Network with fast Process Synchronization
Shrinking process node sizes allow the integration of more and more functionality into a single chip design. At the same time, the mask costs to manufacture a new chip increases steadily. For the industry this cost increase can be absorbed by selling more chips.
Furthermore, new innovative chip designs have a higher risk. Therefore, the industry only changes small parts of a chip design between different generations to minimize their risks.
Thus, new innovative chip designs can only be realized by research institutes, which do not have the cost restrictions and the pressure from the markets as the industry.
Such an innovative research project is EXTOLL, which is developed by the Computer Architecture Group of the University of Heidelberg. It is a new interconnection network for High performance Computing, and targets the problems of existing interconnection networks commercially available. EXTOLL is optimized for a high bandwidth, a low latency, and a high message rate. Especially, the low latency and high message rate become more important for modern interconnection networks. As the size of networks grow, the same computational problem is distributed to more nodes. This leads to a lower data granularity and more smaller messages, that have to be transported by the interconnection network.
The problem of smaller messages in the interconnection network is addressed by this
thesis. It develops a new network protocol, which is optimized for small messages. It reduces the protocol overhead required for sending small messages. Furthermore, the growing
network sizes introduce a reliability problem. This is also addressed by the developed efficient network protocol.
The smaller data granularity also increases the need for an efficient barrier synchronization.
Such a hardware barrier synchronization is developed by thesis, using a new approach of
integrating the barrier functionality into the interconnection network.
The masks costs to manufacture an ASIC make it difficult for a research institute to build an ASIC. A research institute cannot afford re-spin, because of the costs. Therefore, there is the pressure to make it right the first time. An approach to avoid a re-spin is the functional verification in prior to the submission. A complete and comprehensive verification methodology is developed for the EXTOLL interconnection network. Due to the structured approach, it is possible to realize the functional verification with limited
resources in a small time frame. Additionally, the developed verification methodology is able to support different target technologies for the design with a very little overhead

Reduced microvascular density in omental biopsies of children with chronic kidney disease
Endothelial dysfunction is an early manifestation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and consistently observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We hypothesized that CKD is associated with systemic damage to the microcirculation, preceding macrovascular pathology. To assess the degree of "uremic microangiopathy", we have measured microvascular density in biopsies of the omentum of children with CKD.Omental tissue was collected from 32 healthy children (0-18 years) undergoing elective abdominal surgery and from 23 age-matched cases with stage 5 CKD at the time of catheter insertion for initiation of peritoneal dialysis. Biopsies were analyzed by independent observers using either a manual or an automated imaging system for the assessment of microvascular density. Quantitative immunohistochemistry was performed for markers of autophagy and apoptosis, and for the abundance of the angiogenesis-regulating proteins VEGF-A, VEGF-R2, Angpt1 and Angpt2.Microvascular density was significantly reduced in uremic children compared to healthy controls, both by manual imaging with a digital microscope (median surface area 0.61% vs. 0.95%, p<0.0021 and by automated quantification (total microvascular surface area 0.89% vs. 1.17% p = 0.01). Density measured by manual imaging was significantly associated with age, height, weight and body surface area in CKD patients and healthy controls. In multivariate analysis, age and serum creatinine level were the only independent, significant predictors of microvascular density (r2 = 0.73). There was no immunohistochemical evidence for apoptosis or autophagy. Quantitative staining showed similar expression levels of the angiogenesis regulators VEGF-A, VEGF-receptor 2 and Angpt1 (p = 0.11), but Angpt2 was significantly lower in CKD children (p = 0.01).Microvascular density is profoundly reduced in omental biopsies of children with stage 5 CKD and associated with diminished Angpt2 signaling. Microvascular rarefaction could be an early systemic manifestation of CKD-induced cardiovascular disease

Hard color-singlet exchange in dijet events in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV
Events where the two leading jets are separated by a pseudorapidity interval devoid of particle activity, known as jet-gap-jet events, are studied in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The signature is expected from hard color-singlet exchange. Each of the highest transverse momentum (p(T)) jets must have p(T)(jet) > 40 GeV and pseudorapidity 1.4 0.2 GeV in the interval vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1 between the jets are observed in excess of calculations that assume only color-exchange. The fraction of events produced via color-singlet exchange, f(CSE), is measured as a function of p(T)(jet2), the pseudorapidity difference between the two leading jets, and the azimuthal angular separation between the two leading jets. The fraction f(CSE) has values of 0.4-1.0%. The results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In addition, the first study of jet-gap-jet events detected in association with an intact proton using a subsample of events with an integrated luminosity of 0.40 pb(-1) is presented. The intact protons are detected with the Roman pot detectors of the TOTEM experiment. The f(CSE) in this sample is 2.91 +/- 0.70(stat)(-1.01)(+1.08)(syst) times larger than that for inclusive dijet production in dijets with similar kinematics.Peer reviewe
Intra-individual alterations of serum markers routinely used in forensic pathology depending on increasing post-mortem interval
Abstract Post-mortem biochemistry of serum markers has been the subject of numerous studies, but in-situ marker stability after death has not been sufficiently evaluated yet. Such laboratory analyses are especially necessary in the cases of functional deaths without morphological evidence of the death causes and also in cardiac death cases with only very short survival times. The aim of the study was to determine the post-mortem stability of commonly-used serum markers at predefined time points. In 20 cases, peripheral venous samples were taken starting immediately after circulatory arrest and ending 48 hours after death. Serum creatinine, urea, 3-β-hydroxybutyrate, tryptase, myoglobin, troponin T, creatin kinase and creatin kinase-MB have been included. For all markers, we observed increasing marker levels for longer post-mortem intervals. Significant marker level changes began two hours after death. Excessive increases were observed for cardiac and muscle markers. Marker levels showed high intra-assay precision. Furthermore, the markers were robust enough to withstand freeze-thaw cycles. Potential contamination of arteriovenous blood did not influence the post-mortem marker levels. Post-mortem blood should be sampled as soon as possible, as increased post-mortem intervals may heavily change marker levels in-situ in individual cases, whereas the markers are mostly unaffected by laboratory conditions
